Fly Control facts

  • The most common fly pest species in the UK are:
    • House Flies
    • Blue Bottles (Blow Flies)
    • Cluster Flies
    • Filter Flies
    • Fruit Flies
    • Horse Flies
    • Autumn Flies
  • Each fly species likes to breed in different resources, which will determine how we treat them.
    • For example, Blue Bottles lay their eggs in rotting carcasses; if we can identify and remove the source, we can stop the flies! Fruit Flies lay their eggs in rotting fruit, Filter Flies inhabit slow-moving, stagnant drains, and so on…
  • There are more than 100 pathogens associated with flies, including salmonella, staphylococcus and E. coli.
  • When flies feed on waste, they collect these pathogens on their legs and mouths, which are transferred to food and worksurfaces when they land again.

What you can do

  • Remove all potential food sources.
    • Clean up food debris.
    • Keep outdoor areas free from animal waste.
    • Some potted plants harbour flies!
  • Keep bins clean and secure, particularly your food waste caddy.

If you have a fly infestation, we will…

  • Determine the source of the infestation and treat it as appropriate. This may include the simple removal of a food source, a ULV (fumigation) treatment, application of residual insecticide, or a combination of these.
  • We will advise you on how to prevent infestations in the future.
    • Occasionally, it is not possible to remove the source of the infestation (for example, Cluster Flies lay their eggs in earthworms in the ground), in which case we will put together a detailed ongoing management strategy with you.
